The Scout Centre
We are a family of scouting made up of 1st Rye Beaver Scouts, 1st Rye Cub Scouts, 1st Rye Scouts and Captain Cory’s Explores Scout unit part of Hastings Rye and District Explorers Scouts.
The Scout Centre came into use in September 2014. The need for a new building came about as a result of the work on the Rye Swimming pool. The land around the old hut was a school playing field but it became a car park, cutting down on the activities we could do. This, combined with the need to renovate the old hut, and the offer of a plot of land to move into set us on the quest to build a new home, the old one serving us well since the sixties.
We started bag packing in Budgen’s to raise money, a restaurant donated a day’s takings to us, and people volunteered their services. Then other Groups in Rye ran flower shows and table sales for us. Then, we received a bequest that made a big difference, after that we received grants and more donations until we had enough to build. From the moment of planning to the final finishes, it took about 12 years.
At last the building was up then we had to fit it out, this was achieved by volunteers, youngsters and parents pitching in to plumb, paint, insulate and all the other things we needed to do.
